Whole Group Guidance Lessons:
All students are reached through regular guidance lessons. I see each classroom at least 2 times per 6 weeks and we address topics such as the Six Pillars of Character, empathy, emotional regulation, and mindfulness.
Individual Counseling Services:
All students are eligible to receive individual counseling services. Some referrals are initiated by staff, others by parents, but all students have the counselor available to them for any needs that arise.
Our district implements the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) in all of our elementary schools. Through this program students are educated on different types of bullying and the 4 rules to stop bullying from taking place. Teachers hold a classroom meeting once a week where they discuss bullying and give students a chance to talk about things going on in our school.
Definition of Bullying according to the OBPP:
“Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself.” © The Olweus Bullying Prevention Group 2007
4 Anti-Bullying Rules
- We will not bully others.
- We will try to help students who are bullied.
- We will try to include students who are left out.
- If we know that someone is being bullied we will tell an adult at home and school.
Six Pillars of Character:
Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week was started in California in honor of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. He spent his adult life trying to stop drug dealers from harming children, and later lost his life while under cover in Mexico. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated nationwide and is a chance for us to remember Kiki Camarena and also pledge to stay alcohol, drug, and tobacco free. Red Ribbon Week this year is October 23-27 and we will have a several dress up days in celebration.
